Wormser Zeitung Artikel hier
Nibelungen Kurier Artikel hier

Keyboardist Chad Kelly from the UK is rapidly gaining respect as a formidable continuo player and director, having worked closely with the likes of Rachel Podger, Trevor Pinnock and John Eliot Gardiner. We welcome him as Guest Director for this program of rich and strange music from the cusp of the Classical era.
Universal Harmony, the Music of the Spheres. Pythagoras thought you just had to listen hard enough. Kepler, like Shakespeare, though it could only be perceived by the immortal soul.
The concept survived the Age of Reason, fascinating the English mathematician Robert Smith and in turn prompting a career rethink for composer William Herschel: In 1781, twenty years after writing the Sinfonia which opens this intriguing program, he found himself staring at a new planet through the lens of his beautiful DIY telescope. Discovering Uranus, four moons and infrared radiation has relegated Herschel's musical achievements to a footnote on his CV, but as a young man he was a sought-after talent.
Meanwhile, in Germany, the genius of Bach's second son Emmanuel was exploding like a supernova, sweeping aside Baroque intricacy and ushering in a new age of streamlined music. The Enlightenment hero's imagination, though, as you'll hear, sometimes seems to summon those monsters born of the sleep of reason. The slow movement of his Cello Concerto in A, draws you down into inky depths before shocking you with a delicious gust of fresh air in the finale (which will greet ABC Classic FM listeners like an old friend). Such kaleidoscopic shifts of emotion, also evident in his Sinfonias, are more what you'd expect from Berlioz.
Telemann, a good friend of his dad's, was still going strong when his godson was dabbling in such dark arts. The old guard figurehead could also be surprisingly 'Avant'. His outlandish orchestral suite La Bizarre (one of the estimated 600 he composed) can be enjoyed as a lively toe tapping affair, but it also brims with composer in-jokes and is at times laugh-out-loud funny.

Pinchgut Opera: MÉDÉE
BY MARC-ANTOINE CHARPENTIER
City Recital Hall Sydney
Erin Helyard conductor
The greatest opera of the entire French Baroque era.
Originally scheduled in Pinchgut Opera's 2020 season, the greatest opera of the French Baroque era finally takes the stage in 2022. Médée is high drama and emotion: French tragédie lyrique in its most classic form. The sorceress Médée is driven by desperation and the abandonment of her lover Jason to do the unthinkable, and ultimately murder her own children.
Charpentier's sensual lyricism and dramatic insight take us deep inside the mind and heart of this powerful and damaged woman who refuses to be a victim - even at the cost of her own flesh and blood.
Returning to Pinchgut after her star turn in The Return of Ulysses, mezzo-soprano Catherine Carby takes on the role of the tortured Médée, with the brilliant Michael Petruccelli, who was thrilling in 2019's Farnace, as her lover Jason. Cathy-Di Zhang, Andrew Finden and Adrian Tamburini are joined by Cantillation and the inimitable Orchestra of the Antipodes to tell this passionate and unforgettable story.
In the brilliant hands of Artistic Director Erin Helyard, Médée's legendary story will finally be brought to the stage for the first time in Australia, with all the sophistication, eloquence and power of the French Baroque era.
***The Women of the Pieta by Vivaldi concert from September 2022 is still available for viewing on Pinchgut @ Home here

An unmissable concert experience featuring a crack ensemble of singers and players to re-create the splendour and sound of the music performed by the women and girls at Vivaldi's Ospedale della Pietà, the renowned home for orphaned girls in Venice where Vivaldi was master of the violin.
This sublime program, showcasing music by Vivaldi and others, features one of Pinchgut's dearest friends: longtime audience favourite, soprano Miriam Allan, who most recently drew international acclaim after her stellar performance at Prince Phillip's funeral in London in 2021.
Miriam will be joined by a glorious chorus of twelve women and an ensemble of expert orchestral players featuring the female talent of the Orchestra of the Antipodes. The Creation (Die Schöpfung)
"AND THERE WAS LIGHT"
In April AHE turns 10 and we're celebrating with something extraordinary!
In association with Canberra International Music Festival, AHE is joined by Sydney Chamber Choir to present the Australian period-instrument premiere of Haydn's monumental oratorio.
Two hundred and twenty-four years (to the day!) after its private premiere, the AHE, Sydney Chamber Choir and three superb soloists will unite under the guest direction of Roland Peelman to perform The Creation (Die Schöpfung) as its first audience heard it.
This majestic oratorio, with its libretto drawn from the Books of Genesis and Psalms, with Milton's Paradise Lost thrown in for good measure, has always been one of the composer's most popular works, and in many ways represents the summit of his craft. His transition from a musical depiction of nothingness to the choir's blazing "And there was light" is one of the great moments in music, and enough to raise the hair of believers and cosmologists alike. The Big Bang is a hard act to follow, but Haydn effortlessly nails it, sustaining over a hundred minutes of orchestral tone painting, monumental choruses and lilting arias.

Rutter: Gloria
Poulenc: Gloria
Poulenc: Organ Concerto
Rutter's Gloria, scored for choir, brass, percussion and organ is exultant and jubilant yet devotional with great audience appeal. Its playful rhythmic verve contrasts with serenely beautiful melodies for which Rutter is well known. Matching this work in popularity is Poulenc's Gloria, hailed as one of the great and most beautiful choral works of the twentieth century. Its enduring attraction is a response to its simple piety interspersed with an almost mischievous and rollicking enjoyment.
Adding to the attraction of this joyful concert is the rare addition of an organ concerto performed by renowned organist Alessandro Pittorino. Poulenc's Organ Concerto owes its popularity to the wide variety of styles varying from Bach-like virtuosic passages to a sheer playground of jollity and lyrical melodies.
